Extra care provides a real alternative to residential care. People who can no longer manage in their own homes and who need more intensive or high levels of personal care can be offered the benefits of sheltered housing plus the personal care and support that they need. The care is arranged by a Social Services care manager following an assessment of needs, which will identify those aspects of daily living which people can continue to provide for themselves and those which they need assistance with in order that they remain as independent as possible. The care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Extra care can include help with:
There will be a separate charge for extra care which Social Services calculate according to how much income a tenant has. Our sheltered housing schemes which offer extra care are not nursing homes. All tenants have an assured tenancy and a self-contained apartment. If tenants are in need of medical services the doctor and district nurses will visit to provide this.
We offer extra care at three of our sheltered housing schemes.
Lady Elizabeth House is our newest scheme and one of the first in the UK designed with facilities to help tenants stay fitter and healthier for longer. Along with the usual facilities provided the scheme also has a gym, spa pool, under-floor heating, video entry systems, lounge with internet facilities and honesty bar. Every apartment is wired for intelligent monitoring systems which are designed to watch over tenants who are frail through illness, disability or old age and can call for help if needed. We offer some extra care services at two of our other schemes, Maudsley House and Christian Smith House, fifty per cent of these schemes are extra care.
